Sora 2 Isn’t a Video Model—It’s OpenAI’s Trojan Horse for AI Shopping

Sora 2 Isn’t a Video Model—It’s OpenAI’s Trojan Horse for AI Shopping

OpenAI’s valuation has already eclipsed ByteDance’s, yet Sam Altman only wants to clone Douyin—and twist the knife in Amazon while he’s at it. The two crown jewels of consumer tech are social content and e-commerce. Altman’s answer: I’ll take both. Whether Amazon shook is unclear, but TikTok’s user-research team overnight-dropped a Sora teardown…

Sam Altman is a rascal. He has a gift for stabbing you exactly where you didn’t expect—while smiling. While everyone else argued over Sora 2’s physics engine and “world model,” he quietly served a main course: an AI Douyin app plus a one-click “buy now” agent baked into ChatGPT. Translation: short-form video that sells you stuff.

Douyin in danger? Nah—Amazon is the one that should be losing sleep.

We got early hands-on time with the Sora app. Verdict: addictive as hell. The UI is a carbon copy of Douyin, but the engine underneath is alien. Instead of scrolling forever, you create on Day 1. Upload 10 seconds of yourself, grant voice rights, and prompt yourself into any fever-dream scene: moon-walking with Altman on Mid-Autumn night, begging Jensen for GPUs outside Nvidia HQ, or sending Altman to Jingdezhen to flip chicken cutlets (shout-out to the viral “chicken-cutlet bro”).

Worse, the viral loop is airtight. Invite codes auto-follow the inviter—classic pyramid-style growth. But an AI Douyin alone would be small-ball. The kill shot is e-commerce fused to content at the hip.

Last week’s ChatGPT update already price-compares and checks out for you, powered by Stripe and Shopify. Translation: the end of the funnel is no longer a search bar—it’s dopamine. AI conjures a one-of-a-kind item (or a virtual one) at the exact moment you’re hyped, then closes the sale in one tap. Amazon’s moat—search traffic and ad auctions—evaporates. You never “go to Amazon”; the cart comes to you mid-video.

(“Who’d watch AI slop?”—ask the billion-dollar hentai industry first.)

AI e-commerce endgame: from “made-to-order” to “sold-before-it-exists”

This combo—AI content + AI checkout—spawns a new species of business.

Old-school e-commerce, Amazon or Taobao, lives or dies on inventory. AI commerce dreams of zero inventory: sell the idea first, manufacture later. A vase, a mug—AI renders it, a 5-second clip goes viral, orders pile up, then the factory starts. Supply-chain logic flipped upside-down.

But physical goods are only half the story. The real porn is pure IP: face-rental.

Inside Sora you might soon pay to puppet someone else’s digital likeness. Picture perennially broke talk-show host Dou Wentao “guest-starring” on your private Three-Headed Chat episode for a few bucks. Zero marginal cost, infinite stock, massive emotional payoff—the perfect AI product. Once virtual revenue turns on, there’s no going back.

Douyin’s counter: the data landlord watching challengers burn cash

Plot twist: the more we talk, the clearer it becomes—ByteDance holds all the aces. OpenAI is the scout burning VC dollars to prove the path. Douyin is the landlord sitting on a decade of the richest short-video data on Earth, plus CapCut, Doubao, Jimeng, MCNs, creators, production houses… When the route looks profitable, it can march in with scale and crush the pioneer.

Side rant: Google asleep at the wheel

Most infuriating is Google. It has the model (Veo), the front door (Search), the platform (YouTube). Yet antitrust dread, ethics committees, and internal sludge leave it shuffling like a bloated elephant. A limp “Veo for YouTube” demo and… crickets.

Altman the “upstart” has no such chains. He’s the kid who found the martial-arts scroll in the valley and now punches through walls. He spotted the geopolitical TikTok vacuum, aligned OpenAI with U.S. national interest, and moved ruthlessly. Respect.

We geeks keep worshipping OpenAI’s loss curves. This launch reminded me: Altman isn’t courting engineers—he’s hunting wallets and screen time.

Traffic ends in a shopping cart. AI traffic will too.
